Description

Very beautiful same design Shakudo Nanako koshirae signed Osafune Sukesada Muromachi period katana. The katana was made in the Tenbun era (july 1532 to October 1555) during the turbulent Sengoku period. Osafune Sukesada refers to a famous lineage of swordsmiths from the Osafune school in Bizen province, active during the late Muromachi and Sengoku periods(15th and 16th centuries). The blade is 24.5 inches long and in excellent, near-mint condition with a Bo-hi, or fuller, a longitudinal groove carved into the flat of a blade. The sword is fully 34 inches L. Shakudo Nanako refers to a traditional Japanese metalwork technique combining a dark copper-gold alloy (Shakudo) with a distinctive stippled background texture (Nanako). This sword is a vivid example of this technique. The fuchi, kashira, and the whole saya shows this traditional metalwork throughout. The tsuka is also in very fine condition with intact sharkskin and very tight silk-cord wrap. A very fine, rare sword from the Muromachi period. Signed, no papers, with silk bag. Stand is not included.
