Description

The sword is engraved with Buddhist motifs, including Hachiman Daibosatsu and Sanskrit characters (Bonji). Hachiman is one of the most popular deities of Japan, often referred as the god of war. Those signs suggests it held special spiritual or symbolic significance. The blade is 19.2 inches, mumei or unsigned, and the polish is no longer in ideal condition with some stains and scratches due to age. The sword has an outstanding koshirae (mountings) fitted with a dragon-themed fuchi-kashira and kozuka. The tsuka (handle) is also in excellent condition with a tight-wrapped silk cord and a warm patina. The saya is also in very good condition and very elaborate. Circa (1573-1625) late Muromachi to Edo period. Silk bag, unsigned, no papers.
Stand is not included in this lot.
