Robert Hendery (1814-1897) was the most influential silversmith in 19th-century Canada, transforming the craft from a traditional trade into a major industrial enterprise. Based in Montreal, he acted as the primary "maker to the trade, " producing the vast majority of high-end silverware for prominent retailers like Savage and Lyman. His career was defined by his mastery of ecclesiastical silver and massive presentation pieces, such as the 1863 Cartier epergne, which showcased Canadian artistry on a national scale. Following his death, his firm was acquired by Henry Birks and Sons, cementing his legacy as a cornerstone of the Canadian jewelry and silver industry.
