Description

A large, impressive Baroque-style carving attributed to the Austrian sculptor Matthias Steinl (1644-1727). The carving depicts a seated mostly nude male figure, with knife in one hand and severed paw in his upraised arm. The figure is carved in full anatomical detail.

Steinl was a prominent architect and designer in Vienna, famously serving as the imperial engraver to the Habsburg court. His work is celebrated for its intricate detail and dynamic compositions, combining mythological or religious themes within his delicate carvings.
