A large, impressive Baroque-style carving attributed to the Austrian sculptor Matthias Steinl (1644-1727). The carving depicts a seated mostly nude male figure, holding a knife with a snake coiled around his upraised arm.

Steinl was a prominent architect and designer in Vienna, famously serving as the imperial engraver to the Habsburg court. His work is celebrated for its intricate detail and dynamic compositions, combining mythological or religious themes within his delicate carvings.

Artist: Attributed to Matthias Steinl (1644-1727), unsigned.

Style: Late Baroque.
