Description

Small Inuit carved Soapstone figure attributed to Markosie Joan Pitsiulak, depicting a reclining human figure with simplified abstracted form. The sculpture is rendered in a pale fossilized bone with a softly weathered surface and porous natural texture. 

The reductive treatment of anatomy and emphasis on compact mass are characteristic of carvings produced in the Pangnirtung carving community on Baffin Island during the late 20th century. The present example bears an inventory label referencing the artist and the Canadian Inuit Art identification code CPS 362, indicating cataloging within the Inuit art registry system used for artist identification.
