Lot 253:
Antique Canadian Cast Iron Tractor Seat L.D. Sawyer and Company
Description
An antique cast iron farm implement seat from the Canadian company L.D. Sawyer and Company. Cast by the L.D. Sawyer Company in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada Circa 1870-1892. This seat model likely predates 1892, which is when the Massey family purchased a major stake in the business to establish the Sawyer-Massey brand. It features SAWYER’S in distinct, open-letter openwork along the upper curved rim. The cutouts served two practical purposes: providing ventilation for the farmer and allowing rainwater to drain away. While widely referred to by collectors as a tractor seat, it was originally designed for horse-drawn agricultural implements such as seeders, plows, mowers, or road-grading machinery.
Dimensions: 18 inches W x 16 deep.
