Description
A Japanese sterling silver presentation cup (ginpai), Meiji period, c. early 20th century. Of shallow circular form on a spreading conical foot, the interior signed Yoshioka Sounsai, the well with a gold-inlaid paulownia (kiri) mon in the Kaga zogan tradition. Unmarked; tests as sterling standard. Diameter 15.2 cm (6 in.), height 4.4 cm (1.75 in.), weight 296 g. Yoshioka Sounsai is a documented Kanazawa metalworker; a related crest-bearing three-piece graduated silver cup set (御紋章入三組銀杯) by him, dated c. 1906, is recorded in the collection of the Nakamura Memorial Museum, Kanazawa. Some of the gold string inlay is missing, as shown.
