Lot 439:
18th C Cusco School Oil on Canvas Saint Joseph with Christ
Description
18th-century oil on canvas painting of Saint Joseph and the Christ Child, Cusco School from colonial Peru. The robes of both Joseph and the Christ Child are adorned with intricate floral and feathery patterns made of gold leaf. Saint Joseph holds a blooming staff of lilies, which symbolizes his purity and his divinely chosen role as the protector of the Holy Family. Unlike European versions that often showed an elderly Joseph, Cusco School artists portrayed him as a younger, vital figure to whom devotees could more easily relate.
Dimensions: 14 inches H x 11 W.
Condition: previously glued to plywood or particle board and has remnants on reverse of canvas.
