Antique Japanese Lacquer Kodansu Chest, Edo-Meiji Period
Description
Japanese Meiji lacquer kodansu cabinet, Edo or Meiji period, decorated with gold maki butterflies, cranes, pine, landscape views, Mount Fuji, and courtly figures. The cabinet opens to reveal multiple fitted drawers and compartments with rich orange-gold nashiji-style lacquer interiors, butterfly decoration, black-lacquer drawer wells, and shaped metal pulls. The front doors are decorated with figural panels, while the lower drawer shows a gilt landscape with cranes and pine. The interior drawers feature repeated butterfly motifs, with additional dragon or bird panels on the upper drawers. Mounted with engraved metal corner plates, hinges, escutcheons, and drawer hardware.
