John Goodwin Lyman (Canadian, 1886-1967) Oil on Board, Laurentian Hills C. 1930s
Description
An oil on board composition depicting the Laurentian Hills (c. 1930s) by the renowned Canadian modernist John Goodwin Lyman C.G.P., C.A.S. (1886-1967). Signed lower right in red on front, titled on verso Laurentian Hills and signed.
This piece is representative of his work from the 1930s when he returned to Montreal and began championing international modernist styles, moving away from the nationalism of the Group of Seven.
Lyman studied at the Academie Matisse in Paris, which profoundly influenced his use of color, line, and form. He was a key figure in the Contemporary Arts Society (founded in 1939), which promoted art for art’s sake over regionalism. The C.A.S. in red on the back of the canvas stands for Contemporary Arts Society, where this painting was likely exhibited.
Dimensions: Frame measures 23.75 inches x 20.5 H, Board measures 15 inches H x 18 W.
