Description

Canadian Northwest Coast / Salish Coast Indigenous Geometric Zig Zag Textile / Weaving in earthy colours of orange, yellow, brown and cream. With photo of individual who wove the textile.

Coast Salish weaving is an ancient and sacred art form practiced for thousands of years by the Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest. These textiles are much more than decorative; they are "robes of protection" that carry deep spiritual, cultural, and ceremonial significance.

Ancient Fibers: Traditionally, weavers used mountain goat wool, which was highly prized for its warmth and sacred energy. They also used the fur of the now-extinct Salish Woolly Dog.
Plant Materials: Fibers from stinging nettle, cedar bark, fireweed, and Indian hemp provided strength and were often used for the "warp" (vertical threads).
Geometric Patterns: Salish weavings are characterized by bold geometric shapes like zigzags, triangles, rectangles, and diamonds.
Symbolism: These patterns are not just aesthetic; a zigzag might represent a trail, lightning, or a snake, while other shapes can denote a learning journey or specific tribal laws.
Dimensions: 38 inches L x 18 W.
