Charles Sucsan (Canadian, 1932-2022) Abstract Composition, Mixed Media on Paper, signed upper left, dated 1992. Measuring 12.5 inches H x 18.75 W within matting, frame measures 18 inches x 24.
Charles Sucsan was a multidisciplinary French-Canadian artist known for his vibrant and expressionist works in painting, ceramics, murals, and sculpture. Born in Paris to Hungarian parents, he studied art in both Paris and Budapest before moving to Montreal, Quebec, in 1952. His style often blended figurative and abstract elements, characterized by colorful expressions and a hybrid of graffiti-style painting in some of his canvas works. Sucsan created numerous large-scale public and private murals in Quebec between 1960 and 1975, with significant pieces for buildings like Habitat 67 and the Bell Telephone at Place Victoria. His work is held in several public collections, including the Musee national des beaux-arts du Quebec. He was a medalist of the Academic Society of Paris Arts-Sciences-Lettres and received the medal of the National Assembly of Quebec in recognition of his career.
