Edgar Ende Der lahme Konig / Die Schalen des Zorns 1934 Etching on Wove Paper, Signed
Description
Etching on wove paper by German Surrealist Edgar Ende (1901-1965), 1934.
This early pre-war composition presents a psychologically charged surrealist image: a disembodied arm bearing split organic forms suspended above a stark receding horizon. The stark tonal contrasts and expressive linear density exemplify Ende’s early interwar graphic vocabulary, produced during the formative years of German Surrealism.
The work reflects the dark poetic symbolism characteristic of Ende’s 1930s output, much of which predates the wartime destruction of his studio and oeuvre.
Signed in pencil lower right; titled lower left. Printed on wove paper with deckled edges.
Unframed.
