Lot 126:
A Gilt Bronze Figure of Seated Shakyamuni Buddha, Sri Lanka, Kandy Period
Description
This cast copper alloy figure of a seated Shakyamuni Buddha is rendered in the style characteristic of the Sri Lankan Kandy period. The figure is depicted in a meditative pose atop a double-tiered lotus base. The right hand is raised in the Abhaya Mudra, or gesture of protection, while the left hand rests in the lap in the Dhyana Mudra, or gesture of meditation. The robe is decorated with a repetitive wavy linear pattern covering the torso and legs. Key stylistic features include tightly curled hair surmounted by a tall flame-like siraspata finial and elongated earlobes. The statue features a warm golden patina and is accompanied by a small, fringed textile rug featuring a geometric pattern in orange, brown, and cream tones. The figure exhibits surface wear and verdigris oxidation consistent with age, particularly within the recessed areas of the hair, ears, and base. Localized pitting and material losses are visible, most notably on the left knee and the lower edge of the lotus base. The accompanying textile rug shows minor wear and fraying to the fringe. Measuring 14 inches H x 11 W x 7 deep, textile measures 11 inches x 15 L.
