19th C Antique American Large W. Butcher Sheffield Bowie Knife
Description
American very large Bowie knife. The Bowie knife is legendary in the U.S.A. Rezin Bowie created these fighting knives in the early 19th century for his brother James Bowie, an officer in the U.S. army, known for his role and death at the Alamo battle in Texas in 1836. It is stamped with the maker’s mark W. Butcher, Sheffield in England. Sheffield was known for its historic production of quality collection knives and cutlery. This one is 19 inches overall with an almost 14 inches blade. It is a thick blade, unsharpened. The hilt is tight and big in the hand, a very powerful weapon. Very good condition. Circa mid to end of 19th century.
