James Archibald Houston (1921-2005) was a prolific Canadian artist, designer, and author who is best remembered as the primary figure responsible for introducing Inuit art to the global market. Known by the Inuit as Saumik ("the left-handed one"), he lived in the Arctic for fourteen years, serving as the first civil administrator for West Baffin Island and establishing the West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative to help Indigenous artists gain economic independence.
