Antique Japanese Samurai Tetsu-Sabiji Suit of Armour
Description
Forged from russet iron, (tetsu-sabiji) the rust you see on almost every part of the armor is done on purpose. The kabuto or helmet is a Momonari type, the hanpo or face features a fierce expression (ressei). The cuirass, or Dou, is a Go-mai Dou, a five plates heavy cuirass that played a significant role in the evolution of Japanese armor during the late 16th century. The Go-mai Dou consists of five sections of segmented plates encircling the wearer’s body, providing a solid and durable defense against all forms of weaponry, including firearms. Newer maedate (front helmet decoration) representing a samurai kamon. Circa Mid-Edo period (late 17th-early 18th century). In good condition, some wear and distress in keeping with age. No armor box, no black bases included.
