Description
Attributed to William Edward Frost (English, 1810 – 1877) Oil on canvas, Bacchus Declaiming to Nymphs and Satyrs. Work is unframed. Original painting on canvas has been cut and lined with canvas overall verso; lining is attached in stable manner to wood stretcher with nails along edges. Original cut canvas edges are visible along all borders recto. Canvas is yellowed with age, dusty, and taut, likely with minor planar deformations due to paint surface lifting. Painting is faced overall with Japanese paper, due to extensive cracks in paint that are cupping and lifting substantially. Facing has stabilized the cracking. Large area of orange-tinted tidelines/staining on the left half of faced-painting surface. Measuring 38 inches H x 65 W.
