Description
19th C Montreal Hunt Club Collection of Frank F. Rolland including Leopold Galarneau (Canadian, active 1882 – 1902) oil on canvas Portrait of a Horse, Paddy. Signed mid left, titled and dated 1889. Measuring 16.25 x 20.75 inches within slim gilt frame. Paddy was owned and ridden by Frank F. Rolland of the Montreal Hunt in the late nineteenth century. The Montreal Hunt Club (Le Club de Chasse a Courre de Montreal) holds the distinction of being the oldest hunt club in continuous existence in North America. Its history is closely intertwined with the development of Montreal’s social and military elite. Rolland was the grandson of the Honourable Jean Roch Rolland, lawyer, judge, member of the Executive Council, and seigneur (1785 – 1862).
