Pair of Alexander Lithgow McLaren (1892-1978) Paintings of Christmas Dingbats
Description
Pair of Alexander Lithgow McLaren (1892-1978) Paintings of Dingbats in Christmas scenes. In 1915, Ward was commissioned by Montreal-based businessman Charles E. Frosst to create a promotional calendar for his pharmaceutical company, Charles E. Frosst and Co. (later Merck Frosst Canada Inc.).
The resulting calendars, known as Dingbat Calendars, featured Ward’s characters in humorous, whimsical scenes depicting science, medicine, and health. The characters were often shown busy at work performing medical research or tending to patients in a land called "Dingbatland." Alex McLaren was the fourth illustrator to draw the dingbats. Images measure 8 inches H x 13 W, 8.5 inches H x 11.5 W, frames measure 14 x 18.5 inches and 14 x 17 inches. Outdoor Santa scene is signed lower right.
