Antique Colonial Polychrome Carved Wood Figure of a Saint
Description
A striking polychrome wooden figure of a male saint, likely an Apostle or Franciscan figure, carved in the round and standing on an integral stepped pedestal. The saint is shown in a contemplative pose, one hand to the chest and the other holding a scroll, wearing a long robe draped across the shoulder. The surface retains traces of original gesso and gilded polychrome, with areas of natural wear and age flaking that beautifully attest to its antiquity.
Origin: Spanish or Portuguese Colonial, likely 17th-18th century
Medium: Carved wood with gesso, polychrome, and gilding
Height: Approx. 13.25 inches
Features: Hand-carved details, original gilding and pigments, expressive facial modeling
Base: Integral stepped plinth
Typical of devotional figures made for colonial churches and mission chapels in Latin America, the Philippines, or Goa.
Considerable paint loss and surface wear consistent with age; stable structure with old repairs and patina throughout. Original polychromy substantially preserved beneath later oxidation.
