Marc-Aurèle de Foy Suzor-Coté was a highly versatile French Canadian artist, recognized as a painter, sculptor, and church decorator. He is considered one of the first native-born Canadian artists to be directly influenced by French Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. Born in Arthabaska, Quebec, in 1869, he showed an early talent for drawing and initially apprenticed as a church decorator. He made the first of many trips to France in 1891, studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and other academies like the Académie Julian, where he honed his skills in rendering the human form. Suzor-Coté led a cosmopolitan life, traveling between Canada, the U.S., and Europe, but he focused on themes relating to his Canadian roots.
