Description

A Pair of French Restauration / Louis-Philippe Period Silver-Plated Food Warmers (Chauffe-Plats) by Charles Balaine (Paris, active 1827-1844). Stamped C. Balaine A Paris alongside the master silversmith’s cartouche mark (CB flanking emblem/cricket) and Metal Double / silver-plating designations. A matched pair of chauffe-plats complete with matching domed cloche covers, polished lid surmounted by an elegant, cast intertwining ribbon or knot-motif loop handle. The deep, circular warming bases are flanked by two heavily detailed, scrolling foliage side handles and are pierced with a decorative ring of ventilation holes designed to allow airflow for a heating candle or fuel cell below. Each warmer is raised on three robust, classic ball feet. Some loss to silver plating, with copper showing through, both missing an internal component. Measuring 13 inches H x 13 W.
