Description

Edo period (1603-1868) samurai suit of armour. The iron cuirass is a NI MAI DO type with the KUZAZURI ((hip protector) in iron and laced in a high grade samurai fashion (Kebiki lacing) with gold leaf work called Kinpaku. Gold was often reserved to high-ranking samurai and Daimyo, as a mean to project wealth and dominance on and off the battlefield . The sode (shoulder protectors) are also iron, Kebiki lacing and gold, and decorated with animal fur. The helmet is a 12 plates Ken-suji kabuto with a gold Kebiki-laced Shikoro (neck protector) also decorated with animal fur. The big rising sun maedate (front decoration) has been repainted over the years. The hanpo (face and neck protector) is also in iron, Kebiki-laced and decorated with animal fur. And there is a Bonji (Sanskrit) sign on the cuirass torso. In very good condition for an armor of 250 years. Circa 1750-1800.
