16th C Italian Renaissance Urbino Maiolica Dish, Francesco Xanto Avelli
Description
16th C Italian Renaissance Urbino maiolica dish, attributed to the artist Francesco Xanto Avelli. The dish is believed to be painted by Francesco Xanto Avelli da Rovigo in Urbino, Italy, around 1534. The dish depicts an allegorical scene, possibly related to a theme of unrequited love after a Raphael painting. It features several figures in a landscape, including a soldier on the left and figures on the right under a draped yellow curtain. It is an example of istoriato maiolica, a style popular in the Renaissance where ceramic pieces are decorated with complex, pictorial narratives, often based on classical mythology or literature.
The reverse is inscribed in underglaze blue: 1534 / Gia fimigaua la / morso stella – / Nel libro de & Z- / In Urbino, and paper label on reverse with a written inscription.
Dimensions: 10 inches diameter x 2.5 H within box.
