Description

A charming pair of late 18th-century hand-colored engravings depicting British soldiers in various sword exercises and stances, published by H. Angelo in 1798.

The compositions illustrate military drill positions, including “Outside Half Hanger, ” “Hanging Guard, ” and “Inside Half Hanger, ” rendered with clarity and precision. The figures are shown in period uniform with sabres drawn, reflecting contemporary interest in fencing, military discipline, and martial instruction.
The engravings retain original hand-coloring, with vibrant red coats and finely detailed linework. The lower margin inscription reads: “Published Sept. 1, 1798, by H. Angelo, Curzon Street, May Fair, ” identifying the publisher associated with the renowned Angelo family of fencing masters in London.
Presented in later frames with matting.
