While Erdoes is most famous for his deep involvement with Native American culture and civil rights, he was born and classically trained in Vienna, Austria. Before moving to the United States in 1940 as a refugee, he studied at the prestigious Vienna Academy of Art. This specific piece, featuring horses in a style reminiscent of European folk art or mid-century illustration, likely dates from his earlier career or reflects a later return to his European roots.
