Lot 116:
Pair of Antique Tibetan Buddhist Amulet Boxes / Portable Shrines
Description
Tibetan Buddhist amulet boxes, known as gau or ghau, used as portable shrines. Both with chased silver fronts, depicting eight auspicious Buddhist emblems in raised relief, enclosing a central deity within original brocade bags with straps. Measuring 5 inches H x 4 W x 1.5 deep and 4.5 inches diameter x 1.5 deep.
Gau boxes are used to hold sacred objects such as images of deities, mantras, or sacred pills, which are believed to offer protection, good fortune, and long life. The portable design allowed travelers, nomads, and pilgrims to carry their personal shrines with them.
