Adolphe Monticelli (1824-1886) was a highly individual French painter, a generation older than the Impressionists, known for a unique Romantic style that deeply influenced artists like Vincent van Gogh and Paul Cézanne. While his work was not widely appreciated in his own time, it had a significant impact on later artists. The young Paul Cézanne often painted with him, and Vincent van Gogh became a passionate admirer of his work, adopting a brighter palette and bolder brushwork after encountering his paintings in Paris. Van Gogh even stated, "I sometimes think that I am really continuing that man".
