Title: Orphée et les muses (Orpheus and the Muses).

Date: 1942.

Medium: Hand-woven wool tapestry.

This monumental work translates Coutaud’s "surrealist-poetic" style into a textile masterpiece. The composition features a central, lyre-playing Orpheus surrounded by the Muses, rendered with the artist’s signature elongated figures and dreamlike, mythological atmosphere.

Orphée et les muses (Orpheus and the Muses), is a significant example of the mid-century revival of French textile art led by the visionary Lucien Coutaud.
Lucien Coutaud was a prolific French painter, engraver, and stage designer known for his "Eroticomagie" – a personal blend of Surrealism, mythology, and metaphysical dreamscapes. Born in Meynes, he moved to Paris in 1924 and became a central figure in the cultural scene, befriending luminaries like Pablo Picasso, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Jacques Prevert.
