Description

After Francois Louis Joseph Watteau (1758-1823), MORT DU MARQUIS DE MONTCALM-GOZON, CIRCA 1784, engraving with letters by Juste Chevillet (1729-1790), Sheet sight 19″ x 24″. The engraving depicts the mortal wounding of Louis Joseph de Montcalm-Gozon (1712-1759), the French commander during the Seven Years’ War (known as the French and Indian War in North America). The accompanying legend emphasizes a poignant detail of the historical account: Montcalm-Gozon was buried at his own request in a bomb crater, unaware that the British commander, General James Wolfe, had also died during the very same battle.
