Description

Saigo Takamori is an important figure of samurai history, involved in the transition from medieval to modern Japan; he is the true historical last samurai, as illustrated in the Last Samurai movie.
This set includes:
– Splendid military uniform of the new Meiji japanese reform of 1870s, reflecting the French influence, by French military consultants, such as Jules Brunet, the true historical military officer that formed the new Japanese national army, at the end of the samurai period. The hat bears ostrich feather and the suit is lavishly decorated in European fashion.  Hat measures 9 inches H x 18 W, suit is an approximate medium.
– Military parade sword of the period, in superb mounting, measuring 30 inches L
– Japanese 19th century woodblock (ukiyoe) print of Saigo Takamori, wearing a uniform of this type, 14 inches H x 10 W.
– Head band (hachimaki) with the picture of Takamori, measuring 27 inches x 13.5.
– Clay figurin of Saigo Takamori, 4.5 inches H (restored).
