Antique Japanese Shogunal Proclamation Road Sign, served as the official public edict boards of the Tokugawa Shogunate and local han-lords from the late Nara period through the Edo period, lasting until the early Meiji period placed along highways to inform the citizens of a region. The small canopy or roof built over the top edge was standard design functionality. It protected the handwritten ink from washing away under rain and weathering while out on the open road.
