An antique Gibson F-2 mandolin, manufactured in Kalamazoo, Michigan, in 1914, bearing serial number 19419.
The instrument features Gibson’s distinctive F-style carved scroll body with a black-finished carved top and dark reddish-brown stained back and sides. The oval sound hole is surrounded by a decorative double-ring rosette.
Period appointments include ornate tuning pegs with wire and pearl floral-decorated buttons, a metal tailpiece cover with cut-out “The Gibson” lettering, and the characteristic slanted mother-of-pearl “The Gibson” script inlay to the headstock.
The F-2 represents an important early Gibson mandolin design, incorporating the carved-top construction pioneered by Orville Gibson and developed during the company’s formative years in Kalamazoo. Early F-series instruments such as this are closely associated with the development of the American carved-top mandolin in the opening decades of the 20th century.
