Description
Mid-20th century Vallauris Art Pottery Sgraffito Plate, featuring a stylized, incised design of a bird (resembling a rooster or phoenix) against a dark, textured background, a style often associated with Vallauris artists of the 1950s and 60s who experimented with oxides and thick glazes. Possibly Grandjean-Jourdan, as indicated in signature on reverse. Model number in plate 5502, marked MAde in France.
Vallauris, a town in south-eastern France, is renowned for its pottery tradition and was famously home to Pablo Picasso and his work with the Madoura workshop.
