Ancient Greek 22kt Gold Bosporan Kingdom Aphrodite Pendant Earrings
Description
A pair of gold pendant earrings in the style of the Late Classical to Early Hellenistic period. Each features an intricate disc, centred by a bezel-set cabochon gemstone, with a hollow-cast female head wearing a stephane suspended below. The heads are purported to depict Aphrodite or Aphrodite Urania. Executed in 22K yellow gold with fine filigree and enamel detailing. Dimensions: 58 mm long × 18.8 mm wide [2.28 × 0.74 in]. Total weight: 22.4 grams. Catalogue Note: A closely related pair of earrings with sculpted female-head pendants is held by the State Hermitage Museum. Specialist literature records their discovery by D. V. Kareisha in 1840 in a stone-slab tomb at Pantikapaion.
