Antique Marine Oil Painting by John Hammond RCA (1843-1939), Sun and Mist
Description
Fishing Vessel at Dawn, oil on board depicting a solitary fishing vessel silhouetted against a luminous horizon, rendered in the atmospheric style for which John Astley Hammond became renowned. The composition reflects the artist’s mastery of light, mist, and tonal effects, recalling the influence of J.M.W. Turner. Signed. Presented in an ornate period giltwood and gesso frame with picture light. Signed lower right, titled and signed on reverse.
Dimensions: 23 x 19.5 inches framed to 33 x 28.5 inches

John Astley Hammond was a prominent Canadian landscape and marine painter, and a member of both the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and the Ontario Society of Artists. Best known for his atmospheric depictions of the Bay of Fundy, the St. John River, and maritime subjects, Hammond’s works are represented in major Canadian public collections and are admired for their evocative treatment of light and atmosphere.
