Large Art Deco MCM Italian Ceramic San Zeno Lizard-Handled Vase
Description
An Art Deco / Mid Century Italian decorative lead-glazed earthenware vase by San Zeno, featuring twin zoomorphic lizard-form loop handles, a flared ring neck, and slip-decorated incised scrollwork under a multi-toned green and brown glaze. Modeled in the historicist style of 16th-century French Saintonge pottery. Measurement: 11.5 width × 15.25 height inches. Signed S. Zeno, Made in Italy on the base below a stylized medieval merchant ship.
The San Zeno studio was founded in Pisa in 1926 by a pioneering female artist. It operated through the mid-20th century specifically to train and employ young women in the ceramic arts.
