Jean Alexandre Coraboeuf (French, 1870-1947) Portrait of a Gentleman, circa 1895-1905, Oil on canvas laid down on panel, 16 inches H x 12 W. Unsigned but presented as found with an accompanying drawing with inscription attributing it to the artist, 13 x 10 inches. The sitter, depicted with a distinctive imperial beard and direct gaze, is rendered with exceptional sensitivity and naturalism, reflecting the accomplished portrait practice for which Coraboeuf became known during the Belle Epoque. Catalog Note: Jean Alexandre Coraboeuf studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts under Jean-Leon Gerome and Edouard Detaille before winning the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1898. His works are represented in the collections of the Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay, and other major French institutions.
