Japanese Noh No Theater Mask Akobu-jo Old Man 19th Century
Description
Japanese hand carved lacquered cypress wood Noh or No theatre mask representing Akokujo, used for the mae-shite roles of elderly characters in plays such as ‘Tokusa’ and ‘Tenko, ‘ which include the performance of the ‘Jo-no-Mai’ dance. With painted highlights on gesso in red and black, horsehair inset on chin and head, eyebrows and hair about lips represented by painted lines. Meiji period 1868 – 1912. Maker’s seal on back – possibly Ryu’un or Shuzan. Please see our other auctions for more Noh and Kyogen masks.
