Japanese Noh No Theater Mask Uba Old Woman
Description
Japanese hand carved lacquered cypress wood Noh or No theatre mask representing Uba, the supernatural incarnation of an elegant woman portrayed as an old woman in plays such as Sotoba Komachi and Takasago. With painted highlights and grey hair on gesso. Meiji period 1868 – 1912. Maker’s seal on back – possibly Ryu’un or Shuzan. Please see our other auctions for more Noh and Kyogen masks.

Condition: chip to wood on upper rim.
