A handcrafted Gwich’in kayak model of a seated figure with harpoon in hand, created by Cornelius Bonnetplume, a respected Gwich’in artist and elder from the Fort McPherson area in the Northwest Territories, Canada. Marked on underside, Cornelius Bonnetplume, May 22/18, Inuvik NT.
These models were often made as educational tools or collectible art pieces to preserve traditional Gwich’in technology. They typically feature a wood frame (often spruce or willow) and may be covered in animal skin, such as caribou or sealskin, depending on the region’s available materials.
