Description

Oil on canvas depicting a solitary polar bear standing upon drifting Arctic ice beneath a dramatic northern sky. Executed in the style of Frederick Judd Waugh (1861-1940), the composition corresponds closely to a painting documented by Arctic explorer Donald Baxter MacMillan (1874-1970) during the Crocker Land Expedition (1913-1917). The Bowdoin College archives preserve both an image of the painting itself and a photograph showing MacMillan photographs of works by Waugh during this period. Waugh and MacMillan were active in the same Provincetown maritime circles. The present work remains apparently unsigned and is offered as style of rather than an attribution.

The canvas has been laid down on board and trimmed at some point in its history.
Apparently unsigned. Not examined out of the frame. Presented in an ornate gilt frame.

Dimensions: 16 x 19.5 inches, framed to 21 x 25 inches
