Antique Chinese or Japanese Lacquer Picnic Box Set
Description
Chinese or Japanese black and gilt lacquer fitted picnic box set, Meiji or Qing Dynasty, 19th century, composed of an openwork carrying case and fitted interior components including rectangular boxes, trays, stacked compartments, and rounded food or wine containers. Decorated throughout in gilt and red on a black lacquer ground with floral scrollwork, diaper-pattern panels, shaped reserves, and auspicious medallion decoration. The set belongs to the Chinese or Japanese lacquer tradition, combining practical fitted construction with highly decorative gilt ornament. The openwork outer case displays the fitted interior pieces, while the individual containers are lacquered with scrolling floral designs, geometric grounds, and gilt borders.
