Description

A large 19th-century meerschaum lap pipe carved from sepiolite, adorned with vermeil silver filigree and figures in a circle holding chains surrounding a central stone encrusted dome. Hallmarked on body and stem. 


Artistic Era (1850-1925): This period was the Golden Age of meerschaum production. Major carving hubs included Vienna and Budapest, where skilled artisans created intricate figural designs ranging from mythological scenes to portraits.
Characteristics: Featuring a long, removable stem. Lap pipes were intended to be rested on the smoker’s lap due to their substantial weight.
Status Symbols: In the 19th century, ornate meerschaum pipes were considered luxury items and status symbols for the upper class, often displayed in gentlemen’s drawing rooms.
Dimensions: 40 inches L, pipe measures 7 inches H x 9 W.
