Walter Bertelsmann (1877-1963), impressionist marine oil painting on board depicting a serene seascape with sailboats.


Bertelsmann was a member of the famous Worpswede artists’ colony and was a student of Hans am Ende. He is best known as a North German Impressionist who specialized in capturing the atmospheric moods of the northern German landscape, including the North Sea and Baltic coasts. 
Signature: signed lower left and on verso.
Subject Matter: He frequently painted stormy seascapes, coastal views, and the flooded landscapes of the Hamme river.
Style: His technique focuses on "impressionistic light painting, " using expressive brushwork to depict moving cloudy skies and changing light over water.
Dimensions: Board measures 11 inches H x 14 W, frame measures 15.5 x 18.5 inches.
