A large colourful portrait of the prominent Polish artist, writer, and intellectual Jozef Czapski (Polish, 1896-1993) painted by one of his students sitting at his easel, in the theme of painter at work. 

Included in the lot is a small black and white photograph of a child sitting in front of the painting.
Signed lower right, R. Piechuta, dated illegibly.
Painting is painted on verso as well and stamped in Polish across the figure. 
Czapski was a central figure in 20th-century Polish culture, known for his resilience and multifaceted career: 
The Painter: He was a co-founder of the influential Kapist (or Paris Committee) movement, which emphasized color over traditional line and form. 
The Writer: He is perhaps most famous for his book Inhuman Land, a firsthand account of his experiences as a prisoner of war in the Soviet Union during WWII. 
Dimensions: Canvas measures 25.5 x 18.5 inches, frame measures 30 x 23 inches.
Provenance: From the estate of a descendent of the artist who lived in Montreal, Quebec.
Condition: Restoration to painting, as shown.
