Description

Large African ceremonial headdress mask attributed to the Marka (also known as Marka-Dafing) or related Bamana cultural groups of Mali. The elongated vertical form is constructed from carved wood and embellished with sheet brass panels and repoussé metal decoration.Small cords and metal fasteners remain visible, reflecting traditional construction methods used to attach decorative brass sheets to the carved core.

Such headdress masks were worn during ceremonial performances and community events, where their dramatic height and reflective metal surfaces enhanced their visual impact during dance and ritual.
