Description
Victorian-era silver tussie mussie, also known as a posy or bouquet holder, typically dating from the mid-to-late 19th century.
Purpose: These ornate holders were designed to securely carry small flower bouquets, known as nosegays.
Functionality: The attached chain with a finger ring allowed the bouquet to dangle gracefully from a lady’s hand while dancing, preventing damage to delicate clothing from water droplets or floral stains.
Design: This specific piece features intricate leaf motifs, a decorative handle, and often included a pin to secure the bouquet stems within the holder.
Historical Context: Tussie mussies were fashion accessories for upper-class women, used to mask unpleasant odors and symbolize social status at formal events like balls and concerts.
Measuring 5.25 inches L, 21 grams. Acid tested 925 Sterling. Some breaks to silver, as shown. Illegibly marked.
